Yes, young adults have other issues too that contribute to “rebellion.” Hormones, growth spurts, testosterone, menstrual cycles……their physical bodies are bouncing off the walls how in the world can we expect them to not bounce off the walls? Somehow we have to motivate them to get off their duffs and DO something.so……Lets start out by asking them (even though some may not answer) what issues BUG them – issues in school, their city, state, country, world, environment, cafeteria food, homework, whatever, then boil it down to making an impact preferably in the life of another person. How about throwing out to them REAL ISSUES? ……child slavery, child prostitution, children dying from abuse, sickness, accidents, drowning. How about the suffering they can recall from their childhood (which IS past by the way)? Watching a parent that is too drunk or drugged to even move, being yelled at for nothing, being shoved and hit by a parent or someone they thought they could trust (MOST have experienced these to some degree so they can relate and remember THEIR pain). Ask them what could have made a difference. Would it have encouraged them to have a new handmade purse PERSONALLY DELIVERED to them?(not done with thots here)
Every activity or job MUST have at it’s core the ability to convey to the young adult their significance, value, importance in the lives of others. Our young adults MUST be able to BELIEVE that they are important, not just be told but by our actions (trusting them to make a difference in our world). Us older adults need to really LISTEN to the young adults in our world. they see things from a different perspective and maybe they are “rebelling” because they are SO DISILLUSIONED by the so called realities of life, their dreams, their hopes, after all it seems hopeless to most Americans so we go on living in denial -buying more STUFF to fill the void we have due to the lack of significance we have made.oh what a sad state we are in…..BUT GOD ONLY GOD can rescue us, deliver us, give us hope, purpose, a future!! our YOUNG ADULTS MUST be given PURPOSE and VALUE…..REGARDLESS of what we think, how we view them, or even what ever trouble they may get themselves into. just some thoughts……..all the supplies would be donated, gleaned from freecycle.com, craigslist.org, or wherever. For those young adults who like to craft: • hand designing, sewing, embroidering custom purses, dolls, jewelry for little girls in shelters, hospitals, homeless, etc. • designing small shelves, custom painted for boys and girls in shelters, homeless, etc. • maybe even unique clothing – on clean used clothes add creative patches and decor to be worn again rather than tossed.
• a neighborhood garden – veggies, fruit, flowers. All to be given to street people, poor, elderly, sick, those in nursing homes (a bouquet of flowers)
For those who aren’t really thrilled about crafts:
• reading to homeless children
• tutoring

hmm….maybe some of the problem with “teens” today is that we continually treat them as insignificant, rebellious, immature, worthless KIDS! what if we started seeing them as God does – value them, esteem them (yes, even the ones you are having difficulty with whether they be yours or someone else’s), treat them as YOUNG ADULTS. treat them as a beginning adult from the time they are 13ish and not a child who is entering the dreaded tumultuous, dangerous and risky pre-adult years. what if we had significant, purposeful jobs (not chores that WE need to have done) lined up for them as they were entering these beginning adult years? some kind of goal for them that THEY have input in setting. a job to make a difference in the lives of others………more later. i’ve gotta get ready for church
